Senior/Lead Software Engineer

We're looking for a Senior/Lead Software Engineer, Medical device for 3D-printed skin to join our team in Sydney, Australia.

Are you a software engineer with hands-on experience in the design, development and release of medical devices? Are you excited to shape the software architecture of a new device that incorporates 3D bioprinting, real-time robotics control, and user-interaction with surgeons? Are you looking to apply your energy towards advancing the quality of life of survivors of burns and other skin traumas? If the answer is yes, then we would love to chat!

About us

We are Inventia Life Science and we are radically changing the way the world treats disease and injury. We're a multidisciplinary team of biomaterials scientists and tech enthusiasts, deeply inspired by the purpose of innovating for the better. Our revolutionary 3D bioprinting and biomaterials technology enables pioneers in the fields of drug discovery and medicine to radically drive innovation from disease treatment (in areas such as cancer) through to the way we treat injuries. We are looking for a Senior/Lead Software Engineer to come on board and help us to develop IEC 62304-compliant software for our skin-printing medical device as we move towards clinical trials.

You will be joining a cross functional development team within Inventia—the “Skinnovators,” as we call ourselves—collaborating with Professor Fiona Wood, inventor of FDA-approved “spray-on skin” product ReCell, to achieve better healing outcomes for the treatment of full-thickness wounds. We are bringing to market the Ligō platform to deliver cells and biomaterials to a patient’s wound site and stimulate skin regeneration, utilising Inventia’s patented 3D bioprinting technology. The team, which includes fellow engineers Deanna (Senior Robotics Engineer) and Zack (Senior Biomedical Engineer, Ligō Technical Lead), is supported by Australia’s most competitive clinical translation grants and top-tier venture capital funds.

The role

Your first-hand experience in designing and developing software for approved medical devices will help the team in navigating the transition from a proof-of-concept prototype to a medical-grade skin-printing platform that supports all clinical, functional, and safety requirements to achieve certification for use in clinical trials. With support from regulatory and medical device consultants, you will contribute to all aspects of the IEC 62304 lifecycle standard, including the software development plan, system software architecture, risk analysis of SOUP, detailed software design documentation, as well as implementation. This is a unique opportunity to play a critical role in the design of a novel medical device, by driving the early-stage assessment of product risks and failure modes arising from software and implementing the appropriate mitigation strategies to accelerate us towards our goal of improved quality of life for survivors of skin trauma such as widespread burns injuries.

To be considered for this role, we are looking for someone who:

  • Is excited to bring their first-hand experience of designing, delivering, and maintaining medical-grade software under IEC 62304 and ISO 13485 standards to the challenge of taking our skin-printing platform to clinical trials.
  • Can pragmatically lead the phased implementation of the software regulatory documentation using an agile approach that favours incremental milestone delivery, seeking input from medical device consultants as appropriate.
  • Is friendly, curious, and motivated by the opportunity to work directly with clinical, biomedical and biomaterials experts in a cross-disciplinary team during an exciting phase of product development.
  • Is eager to join us in our vibrant Sydney-based office and lab for part of the experience (we are open to remote/hybrid colleagues from Australia-compatible time zones, and to sponsoring visas for the right candidate).

Our culture

We highly value our culture, the diversity of the team and the passion we have for taking our product to market and the impact it will have. A lot of people talk about unique and exceptional cultures, but not many lead it. We place a high value on creating a unique and exceptional workplace.

Unlike many other startups, we live work-life balance - the office is cleared out by 5:30pm, and some of our team have chosen to embrace 4-day work weeks, even the CTO. Amongst our diverse team, our passions are many, and we believe the journey is as important as the outcome. So for us, it's about building exceptional partners and culture and loving every part of the mystery and excitement of what lays ahead. We provide optionality in terms of working from home and our Sydney-based office, which is next to a childcare facility and home to our family of mostly-thriving houseplants. Equity and a strong market-based salary are on offer, within a supportive but empowered, fully agile environment, which we have worked hard to create.

Come and do work that really matters within a team that cares as much about one another as the mission.
