R&D Engineer (Electrical/Mechanical)

We're looking for a R&D Engineer (Electrical/Mechanical), Medical device for 3D-printed skin to join our team in Sydney, Australia.

About us

We are Inventia Life Science and we are radically changing the way the world treats disease and injury. We're a multidisciplinary team of biomaterials scientists and tech enthusiasts, deeply inspired by the purpose of innovating for the better. Our revolutionary 3D cell biology technology enables pioneers in the fields of drug discovery and medicine to radically drive innovation from disease treatment (in areas such as cancer) through to the way we treat injuries. We are looking for an R&D Engineer to come on board and help us with the end-to-end design and implementation of experimental/test systems that we can use to evaluate new features for our skin-printing medical device.

You will be joining a humming technical team within Inventia—the “Skinnovators,” as we call ourselves—who have developed a proof-of-concept skin-printing platform using Inventia’s patented 3D bioprinting technology, in collaboration with Professor Fiona Wood, pioneer of “spray-on skin” and inventor of FDA-approved treatment ReCell. The team, which includes fellow engineers Deanna (Senior Robotics Engineer) and Zack (Senior Biomedical Engineer, Ligō Technical Lead), is currently in the process of redesigning this platform under ISO 13485:2016 standards, supported by Australia’s most competitive clinical translation grants and top-tier venture capital funds.

The role

Your practical experience in the design and construction of electrical and/or mechanical systems will help the team in our implementation, evaluation, and prioritisation of features on the skin-printing platform. Depending on your specialty, example tasks that you may be involved in could include designing a test system for quantifying the precision of droplet placement necessary to achieve cell structures for wound healing, or building mechanical prototypes to evaluate the usability of novel fluidic designs created by the engineering team. This is a unique opportunity to experience developing a medical device under ISO 13485 standards and the risk management strategies that will accelerate us towards our goal of improved quality of life for survivors of widespread burns injuries.

To be considered for this role, we are looking for someone who:

  • Is excited to work hands-on and learn whatever is necessary to implement solutions that
    answer key questions about our platform requirements. CAD design, circuit development, test scripts and firmware features are all on the cards - we can leverage your skillset in one or more of these areas while drawing on your teammates for the gaps.
  • Has enough practical experience in managing small projects to be self-directed, proficient at managing their own time and day-to-day task prioritisation/planning, and communicating the impact of their work to stakeholders.
  • Is friendly, curious, and motivated by the opportunity to work directly with clinical, biomedical and biomaterials experts in a cross-disciplinary team during an exciting product development period.
