Traditionally, 2D cell cultures have been used as in vitro models in drug screening studies due to their simplicity and scalability. However, 2D cell models do not recapitulate the complexity of in vivo biology. This means that a large number of drug candidates fail when they move to human clinical trials. Phenotypic models could provide deeper and more relevant insights in drug discovery.
